AHA peels. Are they right for you?

Exfoliating Acids explained, from AHAs to BHAs.

You might have a friend who absolutely swears by lunchtime AHA peels at the salon, and there’s no denying that their skin always looks amazing. But you may have been put off by the cost of salon treatments. Plus, in-clinic peels can risk downtime, peeling and redness, as well as multiple treatments required. The pandemic has changed the way we approach beauty forever. People want to be able to do spa-like treatments from home and skin peels are no exception.

At-home peels are easier and more convenient, less expensive, and deliver results. The beauty of using an at-home peel is it can deliver dramatic benefits without the discomfort, and in the convenience of your own home. While a topical treatment can’t give you quite the aesthetician effects, an at-home peel treatment can be the next best thing.

Enter NEW Ultra Care+ Platinum AHA Activating Treatment. A natural, affordable and pain free alternative for effective pore refining, rejuvenation benefits. Hyperpigmentation, enlarged pores and wrinkles are no match for this gentle peel with advanced acids. It’s the non-invasive solution that gives you multiple benefits for instant glow and radiant looking skin in just one use.

According to Forbes Magazine, “at-home peels gained popularity thanks to Zoom, where the camera tends to exaggerate skin imperfections. The demand for at-home chemical peels continues to surge.” So what makes our at-home peel so unique? This truly is the peel that does everything. Alpha Hydroxy Acids (like refining Lactic Acid), Beta Hydroxy Acids (like the acne-fighting Salicylic Acid), and gentle exfoliants like Fruit Enzymes dissolve the “glue” that holds your dead skin cells together, revealing younger-looking skin in minutes for the most amazing exfoliation results. Plus, the application is truly special. Just roll to reveal fresher skin! Goodbye pore-clogging debris, hello brighter, smoother looking skin.

What’s in the formula?

Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) – Lactic Acid

AHAs stimulate exfoliation, removing dull, rough skin and activating cell renewal. Gentle acids penetrate the deeper layers, encouraging deep cell renewal giving you more youthful looking skin. All skin types benefit, but AHAs are especially suited to oily or acne prone skin, dull or uneven skin tones, or ageing complexions with UV damage and visible lines.

  • Stimulate exfoliation on the upper surface “above” the skin.
  • Reduce pigmentation appearance for a skin brightening effect.
  • They improve the visible signs of ageing.
  • Lactic Acid is gentle get powerful form of AHA, suitable for dry skin.

Beta Hydroxy Acids (BHAs) – Salicylic Acid

BHAs work on skin’s surface and deep inside the pores. They are oil-soluble and ideal for normal to oily skin that’s prone to bumps, clogs, blemishes, and enlarged pores.

  • Unclog pores and purify “below” the skin’s surface.
  • They help to shed dead skin cells.
  • Target blemishes and break outs.

Your AHA questions, answered.

Q: Why do I need to use it in my skincare routine?

A: Exfoliating is an important step. Regular exfoliation helps to remove the dead skin cells and debris that can clog pores and lead to acne-causing bacteria. It helps brighten dull skin and smooth rough skin, creating a more radiant complexion. It also allows other skincare treatments to penetrate more deeply into the skin.

What’s the difference between AHAs & BHAs (and why do I need both?)

Because by combining both, you can target multiple skin concerns at once. The Acids work together synergistically. BHAs gets deep into pores to remove dead cells, whilst AHAs cause dead cells to detach and slough away. BHAs like Salicylic Acid can penetrate the pores from within. AHAs like Lactic Acid are a ‘humectant,’ boosting skin’s moisture content.

Q: What is the difference between physical and chemical exfoliation?

A: It uses both chemical (when you leave the treatment to absorb) and physical (when you roll the formula off) for potent yet gentle skin resurfacing results. Chemical exfoliation uses a gentle natural Acid solution (AHAs & BHAs), which penetrates into the skin to accelerate the skin cycle – versus removing dead skin cells on the surface with a physical exfoliator, like with a scrub or facial polish. Chemical exfoliation is the latest and more advanced form of a skin peel, which is suitable for the majority of skin types.

Q: How is AHA Treatment different from a liquid exfoliant?

A: While liquid exfoliants will give you effective skin refining results, the new Ultra Care+ Platinum AHA Activating Treatment uses cell-regenerating actives for enhanced skin renewal. Application is also a key difference, as the Treatment works like a leave-on peel (simply massage after 5-10 minutes and see dead skin cells roll away.) You generally apply liquid exfolators  just like a toner only every other night. The new gel-crème formula contains Lactic Acid with Salicylic Acid and natural Fruit Enzymes, combining both chemical and physical exfoliating technology, whereas liquid peels are usually just chemical exfoliators only. To avoid over-exfoliation, never use both of these products together at the same time.

Q: Can I use it with Platinum Lift & Firm Power Masque?

A: The Power Masque lifts, firms and moisturises to visibly restructure facial contours and redefine your natural V-shape. You can use both these products together in the same day, just ensure you patch test first if your skin is sensitive.

Q: Should I avoid combining it with other exfoliating treatments (such as Micro-Dermabrasion Resurfacer or other facial scrubs?)

A: It is important not to over exfoliate skin since exfoliation involves the removal of dead skin cells on the surface to allow the younger skin cells underneath to flourish. Over-exfoliating your skin can lead to skin hypersensitivity resulting in skin irritation, burning, redness, inflammation and breakouts.

Q: How often should I use AHA Activating Treatment?

A: This formula can be used every second night. However, depending on your skin’s tolerance, we recommend incorporating into your regular skincare routine once or twice a week at first and building up on usage from there. Sensitive skin types should use once a week for 5 minutes. As this product deeply exfoliates and renews your skin, we highly recommend protecting your skin with the Ultra Care+ Smart Shield Protection Crème SPF 50 during the day, as skin will be sensitive to sun exposure.

Q: Is it safe to use multiple times a week?

A: Yes but we always recommend patch testing before trying any new skincare treatment. This formula uses Lactic Acid, which is known to be the mildest of all the Alpha Hydroxy Acids. It’s the AHA most recommended for sensitive skin. However, if your skin is experiencing any irritation you should discontinue use immediately.

Q: How quickly can I expect to see results?

A: It works immediately for fresher looking skin. With a noticeable visible improvements in skin texture within just 2 weeks. In product trials, 84% of people agree they would use this product instead of a peel treatment at the clinic.*

*Based on consumer self-evaluation after 14 days, applied every second night.
